What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on Waikirikiri School (Te Kura Reo Rua o Waikirikiri) is a School Report from October 2025. ERO found high quality teaching and rising success, with most students meeting or exceeding the expected curriculum level in reading, writing and mathematics.

In Te Whānau Reo Māori, the te reo Māori classes, most students reach the expected level in pānui and a large majority in tuhituhi and pāngarau.

The school has made strong gains for students most at risk of not achieving, adapts teaching for students with extra learning needs, and builds learning around local iwi waiata, history and stories.

ERO also found that less than half of students attend regularly, although attendance is improving under a plan, and said the board needs to make sure the school is a physically and emotionally safe place to learn.

ERO identified non-compliance in first aid training, staff training on physical restraint, and police vetting and background checks for some staff, and the board has since taken steps to address these.

ERO’s priorities are for the school to settle its use of new assessment tools, develop its local curriculum, Te Papa Tipu o Horouta, into a te reo Māori resource for kaiako, ākonga and whānau, build a transition plan with whānau for students’ next schooling steps, strengthen the board’s governance through regular policy review and reporting on its legal obligations, and keep lifting regular attendance.
