Ilminster Intermediate is a state, co-educational intermediate school for Years 7 and 8 at 70 De Lautour Road, Gisborne. It opened in 1960 and had 308 students on its roll at 1 September 2026.
Its home zone includes all of Wainui Beach, Tamarau, Whataupoko, Okitū, Kaiti, Outer Kaiti and Inner Kaiti, and parts of Mangapapa, Mātokitoki and Waimatā Valley; the zone map below shows the full boundary.
Each year students choose a home-room centre (Challenge, Expressive, SciTech or Xcel), where afternoon inquiry learning is taught through the arts, PE, or science and technology, and every student also attends the Connections centre for food, art, science and music.
Most mornings are spent in Matauranga classes taught by subject teachers, there is a learning support space for extra help with reading, writing and maths, and the school lists kapa haka, drama, bands, science club and a wide range of sports, with its own gymnasium and swimming pool.

Stand-downs and suspensions
Cases per 1,000 students in 2025, adjusted for the ages of the school’s students, compared with all New Zealand schools.
These measure how a school responds to behaviour, and schools set their own thresholds, so they are not a measure of how students behave.
What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from January 2025. ERO found most students engaged in learning and progressing well, and reliable data shows most, including Māori students, make clear gains over their two years, a pattern that has held over time.
Students with additional learning needs are included and progress well, and the specialist literacy and maths teachers who lead the school’s Matauranga learning centres have made a marked difference to achievement.
ERO also found that regular attendance is well below the Ministry of Education target, that the school does not yet use its data to show clearly how many students reach expected curriculum levels, and that partnerships with whānau are at an early stage.
ERO’s agreed next steps are to make better use of the data the school collects to report achievement against curriculum levels and track attendance patterns, strengthen communication with whānau to support attendance and learning, keep building teachers’ te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori, and check how professional learning is changing students’ progress.
