What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Report from October 2025. ERO judged teaching to be of good quality and found learners with complex needs well supported.

Strengths include leadership opportunities for staff and students, close ties with whānau and community groups, a curriculum built around the local history, stories and natural features of Tokomaru Bay, and a firm grounding in te ao Māori through kapa haka, karakia and waiata.

ERO notes the school has been affected by severe weather in recent years. Achievement is low: less than a third of learners are at or above the expected level in reading and in writing, and less than half in maths.

Less than half attend regularly, well behind the Government’s attendance target, and results for learners most at risk of not achieving have not improved since the previous review.

ERO’s key priorities are to carry out the school’s attendance plan, raise achievement in reading, writing and maths, gather whānau feedback on the strategic plan, and build the board’s governance capability. ERO said it would talk with the Ministry of Education about support or intervention to strengthen governance and speed up learners’ progress.
