What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the kura is a Ngā Kitenga Arotake Report from April 2025, published in te reo Māori and English.

The kura follows Te Aho Matua with a connection to Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki, and ERO found students learn with confidence and get strong support to develop integrity and good character. Kaiako are proficient in te reo Māori, a structured literacy programme supports reading and writing, and whānau join regular wānanga reo with staff.

Māuitanga sits at the centre of learning, students take part in marae visits, iwi and hapū events, kapa haka and wiki hākinakina, and teachers track progress closely. In the wharekura, students have individual plans, can study with outside providers and take up work experience.

ERO reported that many students gained NCEA Levels 1 and 2 in 2023, every student passed at Level 3, and some gained University Entrance. The whānau are at an early stage of developing a strategic plan, and a new tumuaki is supported by Te Rūnanga Nui.

ERO’s next steps are to keep building systems that grow kaiako capability, including a framework based on Te Aho Matua and Māuitanga, and for the whānau to strengthen staff safety checks and the kura’s emergency procedures as part of its human resources and health and safety practice.

ERO recommended that the whānau keep working with Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa on these steps.
