Waerengaahika Gisborne: Historic Site of 1865 Siege

Waerengaahika lies in the Tairāwhiti region on New Zealand’s East Coast, within the broader Turanga district. The landscape features hilly terrain influenced by the nearby Raukūmara Range and the Waipāoa River, which supports local agriculture while presenting erosion challenges. The area’s mild climate has long favoured farming as a primary economic activity.

The defining historical event at Waerengaahika was the 1865 siege of the pā, where Pai Mārire (Hauhau) supporters defended against combined government and allied Māori forces. The six-day conflict resulted in heavy casualties among the defenders and marked a turning point in regional control and Māori autonomy.

Land confiscations followed the siege, contributing to enduring economic and social effects for local iwi. These events continue to shape cultural identity and historical narratives in the district.

Modern efforts focus on education and commemoration. Schools in the Gisborne area incorporate local histories into curricula through iwi partnerships, while place-based learning at significant sites helps preserve accurate accounts of the siege and its consequences.

The siege began in mid-November 1865 when government forces laid siege to Waerenga-a-Hika pā, home to several hundred Pai Mārire supporters. Fighting lasted several days, with the pā ultimately falling to the attackers. The event formed part of wider conflicts on the East Coast during the New Zealand Wars.

Casualties were disproportionately high among Māori defenders. The aftermath included imprisonments and the deportation of some prisoners, including Te Kooti, to the Chatham Islands. The destruction of the pā signalled a major shift in power dynamics in the Turanga area.

Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Tūruki, of Rongowhakaata descent, fought initially on the government side during the siege. He was later arrested on suspicion of disloyalty, deported, and became a prominent leader of resistance after escaping captivity. His actions and the Pai Mārire movement left a complex legacy of faith, resistance, and autonomy struggles.

The Pai Mārire movement, founded by Te Ua Haumēne, combined spiritual elements with opposition to colonial authority. It played a central role in the events at Waerenga-a-Hika, influencing both defenders and the broader regional conflicts of the 1860s.

Commemorative events have marked anniversaries of the siege, including gatherings for the 150th anniversary in 2015 that involved local iwi such as Te Aitanga-ā-Māhaki. These occasions emphasise remembrance and community healing.

A memorial in Makaraka Cemetery records the names of six Hawke’s Bay Military Settlers who died during the siege. Ongoing educational initiatives and exhibitions, such as those at Tairāwhiti Museum, continue to share verified histories of the event.
