What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from September 2024. ERO found that most students in Years 1 to 8 reach expected curriculum levels in reading and maths, and a majority do well in writing.

Learners, a large majority of whom whakapapa to Ngāti Porou and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, feel they belong and are secure in their culture, reo and identity.

Results in Years 9 to 13 need to improve, though: only a small majority of Year 9 and 10 students reach expected levels and assessment there is not yet consistent or reliable, and most senior students gain NCEA Level 1 and pass internal standards, but not external ones. Regular attendance is below Ministry of Education targets, and the school has begun setting targets to lift it.

ERO’s agreed next steps are community-informed strategic and annual plans, reading and writing programmes in te reo Māori and in English across Years 1 to 10, using structured literacy, consistent assessment and moderation (especially in Years 9 and 10), and a local curriculum that covers the full New Zealand Curriculum.

ERO also asked the Ministry of Education to consider tailored support for the secondary school’s curriculum and for Year 9 and 10 assessment practice.
