About HB Williams Memorial Library
The HB Williams Memorial Library occupies a central location in Gisborne’s business district. The institution traces its origins to 1869 when Turanga Library opened in the courthouse. In 1967 the library moved to its current purpose-built site thanks to a gift of land and building from the Williams family in memory of Heathcote Beetham Williams.
Architect Colin Pilbrow designed the 1967 building as a striking example of 1960s modernist architecture featuring a bold concrete structure, sweeping roofline, and large plate-glass windows. The library houses significant collections on local Māori history, Pacific narratives, genealogy resources including whakapapa directories and land records, plus historical newspapers and military records.
In 2018 the building received a major extension and upgrade designed by Chow:Hill architects with artistic and cultural guidance from Tā Sir Derek Lardelli. The project preserved original features such as the illuminated ceiling and a large stained-glass window while adding sustainable elements including natural ventilation and efficient air conditioning. The combined floor area exceeds 2000 square metres and incorporates flexible spaces, sensory-friendly zones, and exterior lighting for cultural artworks.
