It provided all-weather transport for timber, livestock, crops, mail and passengers, supporting local sawmills and farms until its closure on 24 March 1959. The former railway formation later influenced road alignments in the district.
The Matawai War Memorial Hall opened in 1952, replacing an earlier hall built in 1910. It was refurbished in 2016 to house rolls of honour from neighbouring communities and continues to host gatherings and memorial services.
